This vintage Mort Schrader two-piece pairs a sharply tailored cropped jacket with a coordinating straight skirt, cut entirely from pure wool in a classic black-and-ivory Glen plaid traced with a subtle red overcheck.
The jacket is where things get interesting. Strong shoulders and a cropped, double-breasted silhouette give it structure, while plush black velvet follows the lapel and front edge—a beautifully restrained contrast against the menswear-inspired wool. Four black buttons and welt pockets finish the front.
The coordinating skirt keeps the line clean and elongated, with a defined waist, subtle front pleating and an easy straight silhouette.
Mort Schrader was established in 1958 as the younger division of the respected Seventh Avenue house Abe Schrader, headed by Abe's son Mort Schrader. The label produced polished American ready-to-wear for decades. �

At first glance, it's classic Glen plaid: sensible, tailored, very proper. Then Mort Schrader runs black velvet down the lapel, crops the jacket, sharpens the shoulders and changes the entire conversation.
That's the part we love.
Wear the set when you want the full effect, but don't save it for an office. The jacket wants denim, a white tee and loafers just as much as it wants its matching skirt. And that skirt? Give it an oversized cashmere sweater and tall boots.
The best vintage suits aren't uniforms. They're two great pieces that happen to belong together.
